How To Write Articles That Are Just The Right Length For Your Readers

Posted by Connie Ragen Green on Jul 2, 2008 in Article Writing and Marketing |

Many people have asked me how long an article should be. I don’t like to tell them that it depends, but that is honestly the answer. The most important thing is to actually start writing and submitting your articles to the article directories, and worry about the length after you have written several articles and had them published online.

The submission guidelines are different with different article directories. I submit all of my articles to Ezine Articles first, because it is the largest directory and I know my articles will be widely read and picked up by other sites. Ezine Articles has a minimum word count of two hundred fifty words. My articles tend to be about three hundred words, unless I am writing about a topic that takes much longer to adequately discuss.

If you are writing articles that are close to one thousand words, you may want to seriously consider breaking them into two, or even three, articles and submitting them with an introduction and conclusion that will still give the reader valuable information. Many people do not have the time or attention span to read an article that is more than about five hundred words. Also, you want them to get to the end of your article so they can see what is in your resource box.

After you have been writing articles for awhile, you will get better at condensing your thoughts and information into a shorter length article. You will also learn how to make your point with fewer words, leading to a better written article and improved reading experience for everyone who is searching for information in your niche.
