Copywriting and Content For Baby Boomers and Beyond

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

Once you know exactly who your ideal clients are and your target audience, take a look at their age. As our population continues to get older, more and more of us fall into the Baby Boomer category. Yet I regularly see advertisements and information geared more towards the younger crowd.

There is a post by James Chartrand that addresses this situation very well. James talks about writing to an older audience and what you need to consider. Using short, concise sentences, and a larger font size are just two of the reasons to think about what and how you write.

When I write my web sales copy I write directly to the person whom I believe will be reading it. I have given this person a name, age, location, interests, annual income, and more. This person represents all of the men and women in my target audience. I get inside of the mind of this person and answer their questions before they even think to ask them. You can do the same thing. Be sure to address the needs and wants of your ideal client, whether you are writing an article, a blog post, an eBook, or sales copy.

You can download my 21 element Copywriting Checklist and apply this information to every point on the list. Writing web sales copy is different from print copy. You will see that as you read through the checklist. Being able to reach your target audience and offer them copy that is easy to read will save you time and make you money.

Finding Your Ideal Clients And Letting The Others Go

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

This morning I went to the networking meeting held weekly in my city. I like to visit them about every 6 months or so to see what they are doing. It is not a group that would be a good fit for my online business, but I do offer them tips on how to promote their offline businesses. I am always thrilled when one of them has written an article or started a blog, but they are pretty set in their ways so this does not happen very often.

Today I was pleasantly surprised when one of the members got up to speak about her landscape design company. She now understands that not everyone with a backyard is her ideal client. Once she was able to focus on which people she wanted to work with, she was able to let everyone else go.

Think about the eBook you (more…)

Article Writing And Marketing, Blogging, And Sending Press Releases To Make The Phone Ring

Monday, August 4th, 2008

One part of my online business involves marketing for three small businesses. I write articles, blog, and send press releases for a handyman, an insurance agent, and a plumbing company. You can do the same thing as you are building your online business.

I began by setting up a blog for the handyman two years ago. I would write about the work he did and include pictures with many of the posts. I always included keywords in the post titles, which included the name of his city and the words handyman, patio cover, kitchen faucet repair, ceiling fans installed, or anything else that we was doing. Within a few months his phone was ringing and he had discontinued all other advertising. I had also started writing one or two articles each month for him, making sure to include these same keywords in the article titles.

By this time the insurance agent had found out what I was doing and asked me to do the same for him. We negotiated a monthly fee and I began writing. The most recent (more…)

Position Yourself As An Expert By Blogging About Your Passion

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Most of you know that I have more than a dozen blogs. No, I don’t post to each one every day. Yes, they are all on different topics in various niches. Three of them are for small businesses that I market for.

The biggest question I get is regarding where I come up with fresh ideas and new content for each blog. The simple answer is that I always have my eyes and ears open. I read other blogs and subscribe to many email newsletters. I listen to other people’s teleseminars. I read articles online that are related to my topics. The end result is that I will never run out of things to write. You can do the same thing and position yourself as an expert in the process. Here are some suggestions for better blogging:

  • Spend time researching your topic, both online and off.
  • Read everything you can on your topic.
  • Read other blogs and leave comments when you have something to add to the conversation.
  • Google your topic and visit the sites that come up. Don’t just visit the ones on page 1 and 2 of Google; go to page 10 and see what gems you can find.
  • Love your topic and be passionate about it. It will show in your writing.
  • Be thankful that you have the opportunity to express yourself freely on your blog. Just 5 years ago, blogs were in their infancy. Now they are among the most powerful and influential sources of information the world has ever known.

Getting Your Piece of the Affiliate Pie

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Whether you are new to working online or have been making money on the internet for a few years now, you should know that there is a lot of opportunity when it comes to affiliate marketing. When I was just starting out I didn’t want to promote other people’s eBooks and programs. I was very busy writing my own eBook and didn’t want to spend time on anything else. What I finally realized was that I could start making money within weeks by promoting other people’s products and services by becoming an affiliate for them.

First, I signed up for a free account over at Clickbank. Then I began to search for products that I could make money from by writing articles and blog posts. When I figured out how difficult it was to find anything on Clickbank, I signed up for a year over at Clickbank Prosearch. This service makes it simple to search for products using keywords, and then promote them through your affiliate link at Clickbank. I use the two sites simultaneously; ProSearch allows me to find the products and Clickbank sends me a check every two weeks.

The way that I actually promote these products is by (more…)

Build Your List With Your Own Internet Radio Show

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Having your own segment on an internet radio show is a great way to let people know who you are and what you do. I have just started doing weekly shows on Blog Talk Radio, and I can tell you that it is a unique way to find new prospects and clients while building your list. If you think you may be interested in hosting your own show, here are some suggestions that will make it work for you.

  • Register for an account and spend some time getting to know how the system works. You don’t want to have to be looking for what you need when your segment is about to begin.
  • Commit to do a show each week at the same time for the next four weeks. Blog Talk Radio allows you to book for up to a month in advance. This will give people an opportunity to listen to what you have to say and get to know you. You want to develop a following and this is the best way to let people know what time your show will be so that they can plan ahead.
  • Use your keywords (more…)

Repurpose Your eBook Content Into Teleseminars

Friday, July 25th, 2008

You can repurpose the content you have written about in your articles and eBook by turning them into teleseminars. I have had great success with teleseminars and you can do the same thing. I have been giving teleseminars for over a year now, but it was not until I learned exactly how to build my list and market to my niche audience through these teleseminars that I began to build a five figure a month business.

I hold a free weekly teleseminar each Wednesady, and provide good and useful content to my listeners. Many of them come on these lead generating calls for several weeks and then choose to sign up for one of my courses or my mentor program.

Join me on one of these weekly calls to learn more about building your online business by writing articles and eBooks.

How To Write An E-Course To Build Your List And Gain Visibility Online

Friday, July 25th, 2008

An E-course is a series of lessons that will teach your prospects about something they want to learn. You can break it into parts, or lessons, and deliver it by email through your autoresponder system. I use Kick Start, and you can get a 30 day free trial if you want to see how it works. If you sign up here I will also provide training on how to set it up twice a month at no charge.

At the end of each lesson you can include links to affiliate products and services that are complimentary to that part of your E-course. This gives you the opportunity to earn some money each time someone finishes one of your lessons. Visit Clickbank and ClickbankProSearch to find digital products you can promote. The key is to find affiliate products that will be of interest to your prospects so they will be more likely to make a purchase. You can decide how often to send out these lessons. Some people send one lesson each day for seven days, others prefer to send one lesson every two or three days to stretch out the time.

You may have signed up for someone’s E-course in the past. Sometimes people do not call it an E-course, so you may have received a series of tips or secrets on how to accomplish something of importance to you. Either way, it gave the person who was sending you this information an opportunity to stay in contact with you over time.

The best E-courses always include an opportunity for the prospect to continue to do business with you. Plan ahead to make sure you will have an eBook, teleseminar course, or other product or service to offer when the E-course is complete. For an example of how E-course work, download my E-course here. If you are having difficulty or have questions about setting up your own E-coourse, feel free to contact me at connie at connie-green dot com.

Membership Sites - Are You Looking For A Simple Way To get Started?

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

If you have been thinking about setting up a membership site, I encourage you to take a look at Extreme Member. One of my students, Charles Parker, mentioned it to me last week, so I had to investigate further. They are offering 200 trial memberships for $2.95 for the first 15 days. If you have any interest in this at all, give it a try. There is no further obligation, and if it will build your business it may be the fastest and easiest way to start.

Extreme Member is run by several people in Australia and appears to be a high quality platform that is reasonably priced. After seeing what others have gone through with their membership software I had been reluctant to jump in, but this appears to be a viable solution to all of the technology issues. Extreme Member has a user friendly dashboard and can be set up easily. Take a look and decide if this is something you want to try. Charter memberships are always the best way to go, beacuse the price will never be as low again when they open it up to new people in the future.

Will You Be Able To Sell The eBook You Want To Write?

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Are you writing an eBook on a topic that people are interested in purchasing? The only way you will know is if you do your research before you finish writing. Many people do not want to spend the time doing their research, and then are disappointed when their eBook does not sell. Here is how to turn your eBook around so that you can make passive income by writing about what you know and love.

  • Spend as much time as possible researching the keywords people use when they are searching for information on your topic. If you have difficulty determining which words describe what you are writing about, look for sites that are doing something similar to what you want to do and see which words they are using.
  • Make an honest assessment of your topic. Is this information already available for free somewhere else online? If so, you may want to rethink your topic and how you are presenting it.
  • Decide if you will need to (more…)

My 7 Step Process On How To Write One eBook And Build An Online Business

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

Writing an eBook will be the single most powerful action you can take to build wealth online. You can build an entire business on the internet simply by writing one eBook. This may sound unbelievable, but it is exactly how I got started online. Let me explain the 7 step process I continue to use to make five figures a month from home.

  • The first thing you must do is to choose a niche. This niche should be broad enough to give you thousands of people who are interested in your topic, yet narrow enough to let you specialize in one area of the niche that you will become known as an expert in.
  • Spend some time doing your research. You are looking for the keywords that people will use to find information on your topic. There are several of these free keyword selector tool available. By doing my research I can find out if people are searching for my topic, if there are already products available on this niche topic, and if the people are ready and willing to spend money on these products.
  • The next thing to do is create a product. eBooks are the easiest, because you can write an outline that includes what you want to say, and then either record the information and have it transcribed or write it yourself. Either way, you will end up with a good quality product that you can sell and repurpose for years to come.
  • Now you must put up an opt-in page. These are also (more…)

Blogging To Build An Online Business - The Fastest Way To Position Yourself As An Expert

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Blogging to build your online business will be the fastest way to get your name known on the internet. Even though there are several million blogs out in the blogosphere, yours can stand out and you can become known in your niche if you are willing to do some work, especially during the first two or three months. Here is how to use your blog to build credibility and reach people all over the world you will be interested in your products and services.

  • Choose either Typepad or WordPress as your blogging platform. Both of these allow you to use the many features that set blogs apart from traditional websites, making it simple to conduct your business from your blog.

Defining Your Ideal Client - Who Are You Selling To?

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

Whether you are writing articles, offering classes or teleseminars, coaching or consulting, selling physical products, posting to a blog, or writing an eBook, you must determine early on who it is that you are selling to. This is your ideal client, the person who represents the group of people in your niche who you are trying to reach out to on the internet.

Your ideal client is part of your traget market. Know what they drive, read, eat, and worry about. Where and how do they live, vacation, spend their free time and money? Once you can define your ideal client, you will find the entire process of building a business online to be a much simpler process.

The example I like to use is the handyman I have been marketing for during the past year and a half. He initially told me that his target market was everyone, but that was not working very well for him. He was working 50-60 hours each week, driving more than 30 miles for some jobs, and not happy with the entire situation. We have since determined that his ideal client is a woman, over the age of 50, who owns her own single-story home that is more than 20 years old, lives no more than 12 miles from his office, has no husband or other male relative who is able to fix things around the home, and vacations out of state at least 4 weeks each year. This is who he now markets to and the change has been dramatic.

The result? He has doubled his income and works 25% less than he did two years ago. This works in any niche, for any market, during any economic period, and for anyone who offers a product or service to others.

Before You Write Your eBook - Why You Must Research Your Topic

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

It is important to lay the foundation before you begin any new project. Before you start writing your eBook, research your topic thoroughly to make sure there is a large group of people who are hungry to purchase information on this subject. The best way to do this is to spend time searching your keywords, your competitors, and the products and services that are currently available online to people who are searching.

Use one or more of the free keyword selector tools to see how many people are searching each month for the keywords that best describe your product or service. Send me an email if you want the URL for any of these free sites. The keywords are the words and phrases that someone would type into Google or any of the search engines when they are looking for information on the internet.

Google your keywords to find out who your competitors are. On the internet it is a good thing to have competition. It tells you that there are people who are already purchasing products and services online in your niche. Take a look at what your competition is doing and then do it better.

Go to your competitor’s websites and see what they are offering, how they reach their prospects, and what you can do that is similar or an improved version of what is already being done. You can even right-click on your competitors’ websites to see what keywords they are using. This is a great way to develop your own marketing plan and get your online business started.

Once you have completed all of these tasks, begin to write your eBook. You will know exactly what people are looking for, what others have to offer, and how you can best compete online so that people will choose to purchase from you instead of from somebody else.

Rotary Convention Los Angeles and Your Niche Market

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

I just came home from the opening ceremonies at the Rotary International Convention. This year it is here in Los Angeles, for the first time since 1962. That was the year former President Ronald Reagan gave the keynote address, back when he was an actor and not yet a politician. As I sat in the large hall at the Los Angeles Convention Center, I looked around at the group of almost 20,000 people who were there with me. We are just a small portion of the 1.2 miliion Rotarians worldwide, living in more than 200 different countries.

As the parade of flags from each of these countries marched by and the Unite States national anthem was sung by a Rotarian from Los Angeles, I began to think of these people as a niche market. Even though we are so diverse by ethnicity, religion, and country of origin we still have so much in common. One of these things is the Rotary motto, Service Above Self. If I were writing an eBook or creating an information product of any kind, what would this group be interested in?

Think of the niche you will be marketing to. Ask yourself these same questions and see what you come up with. Do your research and find out what they care about, what brings them pain, and what problems you may be able to solve for them. Answer these questions accurately and you will have a winning product.
